Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption · San Francisco, USA
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco is one of the most distinctive examples of modern religious architecture in the United States. Designed by architects Pietro Belluschi and Pier Luigi Nervi, the cathedral was completed in 1971 following the destruction of the previous cathedral in a fire.
The structure is defined by four hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces that rise from the square base to form a sculptural roof structure. Constructed in reinforced concrete, the design creates a dramatic interior space where natural light enters through a continuous skylight at the top of the structure.
The cathedral forms part of a larger complex that includes the Archbishop’s residence and conference facilities, and it stands as a landmark example of structural expression and modernist church architecture.
