Jüdisches Zentrum · München
The Jewish Center in Munich is a cultural and religious complex located on St.-Jakobs-Platz in the historic centre of the city. The ensemble consists of the main synagogue Ohel Jakob, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish Museum Munich.
Designed by the architects Wandel Hoefer Lorch + Hirsch, the project was completed between 2006 and 2007 following an international architectural competition. The buildings are organised as three distinct volumes that together form a new public urban space within Munich’s old town.
The synagogue forms the central element of the complex and rises above a solid travertine stone base with a glass and steel structure above, symbolically referencing the biblical “tent of Jacob”.
