Via al Vittoriale · Gardone Riviera , Italien
Il Vittoriale degli Italiani is a monumental estate overlooking Lake Garda in Gardone Riviera, Italy. The complex was developed between 1921 and 1938 by the Italian poet and writer Gabriele D’Annunzio, who collaborated with architect Giancarlo Maroni to transform the site into his final residence and a monument celebrating his life and the memory of Italy’s First World War history.
The estate is composed of a unique ensemble of buildings, gardens, terraces, squares and water features spread across a hillside landscape. Among its most striking elements are the open-air amphitheatre overlooking Lake Garda, the Prioria residence, and the bow of the naval cruiser Puglia embedded dramatically into the hillside.
Today the Vittoriale functions as a museum complex and cultural site open to the public, offering insight into D’Annunzio’s life and into the artistic and architectural ambitions behind this highly personal and symbolic environment.
