Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg is one of the most significant examples of Scandinavian modernist museum architecture. The building was designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto together with Elissa Aalto and the Danish architect Jean-Jacques Baruël, and completed in 1972.
The museum is built in white marble and organised around a central exhibition hall with surrounding galleries. Aalto’s design carefully manipulates natural daylight through skylights and indirect lighting systems to create ideal conditions for viewing art.
Located near Aalborg’s parkland landscape, the museum also includes a sculpture garden designed as part of the overall architectural concept, integrating art, architecture and landscape.
